Man United youngster compared to Bukayo Saka gets England U17 call-up
Highly-rated Manchester United youngster Bendito Mantato has been named in England’s squad for the European U17 Championship.
The competition begins next week with England facing Belgium in their group opener. Italy and Czechia are their other opponents.
Head coach Neil Ryan selected Mantato, Manchester City’s Kaden Braithwaite, and four others as his defensive options for the competition.
He plays as a forward for United, but Ryan prefers to play him as a defender.
Mantato played twice during the qualification series. He started against Malta and Latvia but was an unused substitute in the 4-2 win over Sweden.
However, he was not named in the squad for the last three games played in March.
The 17-year-old debuted for England U17 last September, featuring in an international friendly against Italy.
He is also eligible to play for Angola through his parents, but chose to represent England.
He was invited to represent them in 2023 when he was called up to the U15 squad.
Mantato is one of United’s best academy players
Mantato is one of the most outstanding talents in the United academy and has drawn comparisons with Arsenal’s Bukayo Saka.
He chipped in with ten goals and four across all competitions for the academy this term.
Mantato’s talent has not gone unnoticed, as manager Ruben Amorim included him in the matchday squad for the Europa League semi-final ties against Athletic Bilbao.
He has attracted the interest of other Premier League clubs, but United have tied him down to a new four-year contract.
The versatile youngster could be involved with the first team during pre-season, but is still expected to feature for the academy next term.
