Red Sox Rumors: Boston Will Call Up Infielder For Romy González
A Red Sox first baseman option reportedly is heading to the injured list.
According to The Boston Globe’s Alex Speier and MassLive’s Chris Cotillo, Boston will call up Nick Sogard and place Romy González on the injured list Saturday. González suffered a quad injury in last Wednesday’s win over the Texas Rangers after a collision at first base.
The Red Sox relied on González as the primary first base option when Triston Casas suffered a season-ending knee injury. Abraham Toro took over that role when González suffered his injury, and it’s likely Sogard will be an option, too.
Sogard has experience playing the entire infield, and the switch-hitter will be relied upon in the short term until González returns. Sogard made his MLB debut last year, playing 31 games for Boston. He recorded eight RBIs off a .650 OPS.
The Red Sox continue their series against the Kansas City Royals at Kauffman Stadium on Saturday. You can check out full coverage on NESN starting with pregame at 6 p.m. ET.
