Red Sox’s Trevor Story Reacts To Rafael Devers Situation

Rafael Devers’ public comments about Red Sox chief baseball officer Craig Breslow asking him to move to first base were something that the clubhouse couldn’t avoid.

Trevor Story is one of Boston’s most respected leaders in the clubhouse, but the veteran doesn’t plan on letting the situation pester in the locker room.

“We’re all adults here and everyone can have their own opinion,” Story told MassLive’s Chris Cotillo on Friday. “Raffy expressed that. I think, obviously, he felt a little frustrated with the way things were handled. I don’t know, necessarily, the details of how it was handled or really been in there to talk with him yet. To talk any much more about it would be irresponsible, I think, because this thing’s kind of still playing out.

“We’ll talk about it. Obviously, things are fresh and a little emotional right now, but yeah we’ll do it. Like I said, we’re all adults. We’ll all figure this thing out eventually and, one way or the other, it’s about winning games and I think everyone can agree on that.”

Breslow, president Sam Kennedy and principal owner John Henry traveled to Kauffman Stadium with the team to speak to Devers directly. It was an unplanned trip, so Breslow admitted to reporters that he didn’t have a chance to speak with many people in the clubhouse.

Story is familiar with switching positions when he made the move from shortstop to second base when he arrived in Boston in 2022. The 32-year-old admitted to MassLive that he had not been approached to shift to first base after Triston Casas’ season-ending injury. However, he noted how different his situation was from Devers’.

“It’s all such a personal thing,” Story said. “I think a lot of it has to do with comfortability and stability. That kind of differs from person to person if some guys can make adjustments quicker or not.

“We’ve seen Raffy do it. He went from third to DH. He has shown that he made that adjustment to do better for the team. I think there’s a lot to be said for that.”

Devers’ switch from third to DH came in spring training, and the All-Star admitted he wasn’t sure if he would be comfortable with a move to first, a position he’s never played in the majors.

“I don’t think it’s as easy as everyone makes it out to be,” Story said. “It’s a challenging position. It’s a very intricate, detailed position, there’s a lot of things that go into it.”

The Red Sox will need to add depth at first base, as it appears Romy González is on his way to the injured list with a back strain. Abraham Toro started in his place and is a trusted option for Alex Cora.
