Special honour for Friday Night’s Mascots

0 0

QUEEN’S PARK fans have said goodbye to a season that’s sent the Spiders all over the country – from Peterhead to Ayr, and Aberdeen – twice.

Two Spiders supporters have followed them all the way –  then had the honour of leading the teams out, for two special reasons.

Young fans Ross McKay and Ethan Smith performed the special duties at Hampden – and celebrated Ross’ 12th birthday at the same time.

For the duo it’s extra special to walk out at the National Stadium because the last time they were Spiders mascots was during our stay at Stenhousemuir two years ago.

Since then they’ve followed the team home and away, rounding off another campaign in special circumstances, pitchside at Hampden.

Ross’ proud dad Douglas said: “We’ve been to every game this season bar two through illness.

“It’s a special occasion with Ross’ birthday coming up and both he and Ethan have been so excited since they found out.

“We’ve travelled all over the country and the boys just love their football, and have done ever since they started coming.”

Both received a special video message from captain Callum Ferrie to mark their important matchday role on Friday evening.

Douglas added: “He’s both boys’ favourite player and they met him the last time out at Stenhousemuir.

“That was a special occasion and made memories to last a lifetime but to now do the same at Hampden is extra special.

“It’s something to live with them forever.”

Of course the game was the last of the season and rounded off our campaign at Hampden Park.

Ross and Ethan, who both attend Bridge of Weir Primary School,  said: “It’s unbelievable.

“It’s brilliant to walk out at Hampden – it’s a lot bigger than Ochilview at Stenhousemuir!

“To do it on a special occasion is brilliant.”

Their last appearance was in a 2-0 win and though they were hoping for a repeat against Raith Rovers, the Spiders went down 5-1 to the play-off chasing Fife side.

Ethan attends games with his dad Ian and both boys were called upon for some impromptu ball boy duties when the ball landed near their seat in the south stand.

Despite the result Ross added: “It’s been a brilliant birthday surprise!”
