Tottenham coach is now favourite to become next West Brom manager
Ryan Mason has reportedly emerged as one of the leading contenders to take over as West Bromwich Albion’s head coach, however, the Tottenham assistant coach will not be distracted by the job offer for the time being.
Mason retired as a player in 2018 following a serious head injury while playing for Hull City and shortly after, he joined as a coach in the Spurs academy.
He has been part of the club’s first-team coaching staff over the last few years and has served as the interim head coach on two occasions: After Jose Mourinho’s departure in 2021 and after the sacking of Antonio Conte and Cristian Stellini in 2023.
The 33-year-old has been part of Ange Postecoglou’s coaching staff from day one, but he could now get his first crack at management in the Championship.
Ryan Mason is fully focused on Tottenham’s Europa League campaign
It has now been revealed by talkSPORT that Mason has emerged as the favourite to take over at West Brom, who are now looking for Tony Mowbray’s long-term replacement after missing out on the playoffs.
However, the report says that the Spurs assistant coach’s entire focus at the moment is on Tottenham’s Europa League run.
The Lilywhites are looking to book a place in the final this week as they carry a 3-1 advantage to the second leg at Bodo/Glimt, with the report stating that Postecoglou does not want any distractions at this stage of the season.
As a result, West Brom may have to wait until the Europa League final on May 21 if they want to paint Mason as their manager.
Ryan Mason came close to becoming manager of Anderlecht
Interestingly, it is also revealed by talkSPORT that Mason came close to being named Anderlecht manager last year, but the parties mutually agreed not to progress with talks.
The outlet says that he was also one of the leading contenders to take over at Swansea back in February.
He could now be handed an opportunity to sit in the dugout at the Hawthorns this summer as the Baggies aim to return to the top-flight after being consigned to a fifth straight season in the Championship.
