Ange Postecoglou makes Mathys Tel admission following West Ham draw

0 3

Ange Postecoglou has admitted that he has asked a lot of Mathys Tel since he arrived at Tottenham and he praised the teenager for adapting to the demands of different positions in the Spurs system.

After a difficult start to life in North London since arriving on loan from Bayern in January, Tel has shown signs of improvement over the last few weeks and is now looking a lot more at home in his new surroundings.

The 20-year-old did some excellent work to set up Tottenham Hotspur’s opener against West Ham, winning the ball high up the pitch before squaring it to his compatriot Wilson Odobert, who had a relatively straightforward finish.

That means that the forward has four goal contributions in a Spurs shirt, and while those may not be numbers that justify paying £45m for him, Postecoglou feels that the youngster is now starting to come into his own.

Ange Postecoglou praises Mathys Tel for filling Heung-min Son void

The Tottenham head coach pointed out that Tel has had to play across the frontline in his first few months at N17, remarking that the newcomer has had some very important learnings in his time at the club so far.

The Australian praised the man on loan from Bayern for the way he has stepped up in Heung-min Son’s absence and for being able to take information on board.

Speaking after his side’s 1-1 draw against West Ham, Postecoglou said about Tel (via Football.London): “We’re asking some big jobs of him, playing on the left and then in the centre. He’s constantly learning. A lot of our guys I know will develop into top footballers.

“They have to go through this process of learning and adapting and understanding the demands of the Premier League and the demands of this football club.

“We’ve asked a lot of Matty since he’s come in. He’s pretty much played in every game at some point. He’s taken in the information and he understands the role a little bit better, especially out on the left.

“Again, important for us. These last few weeks we’ve obviously had Sonny out. We’ve needed him to fill that void and I think he’s done that job well.”

Will Tottenham buy Tel permanently this summer?

It has been widely reported over the last few weeks that while the Lilywhites want to sign the France Under-21 international, they do not want to pay a big fee for him.

According to various sources, Tottenham have decided to renegotiate a discounted deal for Tel rather than activating the £45m option to buy the player.

Some outlets have suggested that Spurs are hoping to sign Tel for around £30m, but the North Londoners allegedly remain convinced that the youngster has the potential to evolve into a top player.
