How Blue Jays Stop Red Sox From Hurdling AL East Obstacle

The Boston Red Sox still need to consistently conquer teams within the American League East before they can truly step forward as contenders.

Boston faltered Wednesday and Thursday night to drop the series to the Toronto Blue Jays. The Red Sox are 30-41 against the Blue Jays since the start of the 2022 season. They’re now 2-5 against Toronto in 2025 in a tight division to start the season.

The Red Sox have not figured out the Blue Jays in recent years and the team north of the border is a major reason why Boston continues to struggle in recent seasons against the AL East. At 6-7 against the division so far, that needs to change for the ball club to become a contender for the postseason again. Their last playoff berth in 2021 also marked the last time the team had a winning record against the AL East at 41-35.

Now to be fair, Boston is 4-2 against the Baltimore Orioles and Tampa Bay Rays in 2025 while the first matchup with the New York Yankees doesn’t roll around until June. But it is the Blue Jays who continue to be an obstacle for the Red Sox and mark a notable part of the problem in Boston’s three-year playoff drought.

If the Red Sox dominate the Rays, Orioles and Yankees this season, then this Blue Jays trend may not matter as much. For now, the Blue Jays angle amplifies the inconsistent struggles of the talented roster that entered the season with far greater expectations than the performance to date.

It’s also just the start of May. With that said, keep an eye on this trend.
