Chelsea Women end Man United's unbeaten home record

0 5

Manchester United Women lost at home for the first time in the Women’s Super League this season on Wednesday evening, losing 1-0 to champions Chelsea.

United had two consecutive chances to go ahead within the opening half hour, but could not convert them.

Forward Melvine Malard beat Millie Bright before aiming at goal, but goalkeeper Hannah Hampton saved her effort.

Defender Naomi Girma made a fantastic block to deny Grace Clinton from registering her name on the scoresheet.

In the 39th minute, Johanna Rytting Kaneryd put Malard through, but Hampton was quick enough to close her down before she could aim at goal.

United were denied a penalty on the stroke of half-time when Clinton hit the deck after being caught by Millie Bright.

Six minutes after the restart, Clinton missed another opportunity to give United the lead after she was presented with an opportunity from a corner kick.

Tullis-Joyce made a triple save just before the hour mark to keep the scoreline goalless.

The 28-year-old pushed Aggie Beever-Jones’s long-range effort away, then denied Johanna Rytting Kanery’s and Erin Cuthbert’s follow-up attempts.

In the 67th minute, substitute Elisabeth Terland’s effort from 15 yards went over the goal.

Chelsea scored in the 74th minute as Lucy Bronze headed the ball home from Sandy Baltimore’s corner.

Catarina Macario nearly sealed the Blues’ victory, beating Tullis-Joyce at the near post, but her effort did not enter the post.

Deep into the stoppage time, Bright’s block denied Terland from snatching a point for United.

Chelsea have now won the league title. They have also broken the record for the longest unbeaten streak, having yet to taste defeat in 20 games.

Man United need at least three points in the last two fixtures to secure their Women’s Champions League qualification spot.
