PWHL Announces New Expansion Team Set To Begin Play In 2025-26

The PWHL announced another expansion team.

After announcing Vancouver as an expansion team last week, the PWHL announced Wednesday its expansion to Seattle with the new team set to begin play in the 2025-26 season. The team will play its home games at Climate Pledge Arena and train at the Kraken Community Iceplex.

The Seattle franchise’s primary color will be Emerald Green, and its secondary color will be Cream, per a league press release. The team will join the league’s single-entity ownership structure under The Walter Group.

As part of the PWHL Takeover Tour, the Boston Fleet played the Montréal Victoire in front of a crowd of 12,608 at Climate Pledge Arena.

“We are so thrilled to be unveiling a team here today,” executive vice president of hockey operations Jayna Hefford told The Athletic’s Hailey Salvian. “Being here for the Takeover Tour game, there was an amazing energy in the building. Climate Pledge Arena is a best-in-class facility. The Kraken have been amazing partners. … And we know this is a community that loves women’s sports.”

Details about an expansion draft and how Seattle and Vancouver will be integrated into the 2025 PWHL Draft on June 24 will be announced at a later date. The expansion franchise announcements mean there will be eight teams competing in the PWHL’s third season.
