Ange Postecoglou equals shocking Ossie Ardiles record that could define his Tottenham era

0 2

Tottenham and Ange Postecoglou have already equalled an unwanted record by registering their most defeats in a 38-game Premier League season, and they are now on course to become the worst-ever Spurs side in the competition’s history.

Tottenham barely laid a glove on Liverpool at Anfield today as the Reds brushed them aside 5-1, which is not the first time that Arne Slot’s men have humiliated the Lilywhites this season.

What is telling is that the defeat has not inspired any anger from the Spurs fan base, but rather a sense of apathy, with hardly anyone left surprised that Postecoglou’s men were once again taught a harsh lesson.

That tells one all you need to know about the feeling around the club at the moment, with it being an open secret right now that Postecoglou’s days at Tottenham are numbered, no matter what happens in the Europa League.

Ange Postecoglou has now broken yet another unenviable record

Tottenham’s 5-1 loss at Anfield yesterday was their 19th defeat of the season, which is the joint-most the Lilywhites have lost in a 38-game Premier League campaign.

By doing so, Spurs have equalled their tally of losses from the 2003-04 season and the 1993-94 campaign, although the latter was a 44-game season.

That means that if Tottenham lose one of their four remaining games, it will be the most losses that the club have ever posted in any Premier League campaign.

Additionally, Spurs need eight more points to surpass their lowest-ever points tally in the Premier League era, which stands at 44.

Ange Postecoglou also pulls level with Ossie Ardiles as the Tottenham manager with the most defeats in a season (19). However, Ardiles did it in a 42-game season, while Postecoglou has only played 34 in a 38-game campaign.

Postecoglou’s Premier League record is indefensible

There is no doubt that there have been extenuating circumstances for Spurs this season, not least their injury crisis and fixture pile-up during the winter.

However, even factoring those in, the results have simply not been good enough, with the current Tottenham squad certainly having enough quality to challenge for the European spots.

There is absolutely no evidence on the pitch to suggest that the team is moving in the right direction, and the club’s hierarchy have no choice but to make a change at the top this summer, even if Spurs win the Europa League title.
