Patriots Had More Day 2 Trade Offers Than Usual, Eliot Wolf Says

The New England Patriots made strategic moves during the first three rounds of the 2025 NFL Draft to better the team around franchise quarterback Drake Maye.

Executive vice president of player personnel Eliot Wolf appeared to enjoy this year’s draft a lot more than last.

“The hardest decision tonight was what to eat. I wasn’t really excited about some of the choices in there,” Wolf joked with the media during his draft day recap press conference at Gillette Stadium, per team-provided video. “In all honesty, there were some really good conversations before our first pick. … There was a little bit of a debate about who we were going to pick.

“Ultimately, one of the players we were talking about got drafted. So it didn’t end up mattering. But I think it was a really good step in the right direction, just for us working together in our relationship as coworkers, because we have to have productive disagreements for this to work.”

Although Wolf declined to reveal which player it was that was taken off the board, he admitted one thing about night two of the draft.

“I would say there were more trade offers tonight than I would say is normal,” he said. “There were some that you were kind of like, you don’t have to think about it.

“Sometimes you get off the phone, you’re like, ‘Hey, let me check on that. I’ll call you right back.’ There were a couple that were just like, ‘Nah!'”

The Patriots did have conversations with other teams about possibly moving up in the draft. However, Wolf admitted the conversations didn’t amount to much.

“We had some of those conversations,” Wolf said. “They were probably saying the same thing I just said about us, ‘That’s not enough.’ Ultimately, it just didn’t work out in that fashion.”

After focusing on the offensive side of the ball in the first three rounds, Wolf all but confirmed they’d be looking toward the defensive side with the club’s remaining six picks across the final four rounds of the draft.
