Ange Postecoglou reacts to that controversial Cristian Romero interview
Cristian Romero’s recent interview has sparked plenty of noise at Tottenham, but Ange Postecoglou isn’t having any of it. The Spurs boss had a pointed response when asked about the defender’s comments hinting at a move to Spain.
In recent months, there has been plenty of talk and speculation surrounding the future of Tottenham defender Cristian Romero.
The centre-back has been linked with a move to Spain after reportedly refusing to sign a new, more lucrative deal put forward by Tottenham Hotspur.
Atletico Madrid are said to have shown interest in the defender and, according to reports, the Spanish club have already contacted Romero’s camp to gauge the situation.
While the summer window is still a few months away, Romero stirred the pot earlier this week with a candid interview, hinting at a possible move away from Spurs.
When asked about his next step, the Argentine admitted he’d love to play in Spain. He said: “A league I would like to play in would be Spain to compete in all the major leagues.”
Ange Postecoglou responds to Romero transfer comments
In his most recent press conference ahead of the clash against Liverpool, Tottenham head coach Ange Postecoglou was asked to weigh in on Cristian Romero’s comments about a potential move to Spain.
Postecoglou claimed he wasn’t too familiar with the interview in question, but made it clear that the focus inside the club remains on finishing the season strongly.
He told football.london: “I haven’t read the report too closely but I mean it’s like me, if you get asked a question, you have got to answer it.
“I am sure if you ask me a lot of questions about my future, you’d probably get some great headlines out of that as well, but it doesn’t change (anything).
“Do you know what’s important right now? It is not Cristian Romero’s future or anyone else’s future, it is that we have an unbelievable opportunity to do something special at this football club and for me and everyone involved internally, that is what we’re concentrating on.
“Let’s put our heads down and make sure, because I think for our supporters that is what’s the most important thing to them, right now all they care about is that we’re in the last four of a European competition and we want to do something special. That is where our focus is.”
Tottenham fans divided on Cristian Romero’s future amid transfer links
Spurs fans have been vocal in response to Romero’s interview, with plenty questioning Cristian Romero’s mentality and commitment to the badge. Some supporters have even gone as far as to suggest that he shouldn’t be starting games.
Still, the bigger picture is clear – Tottenham are in a European semi-final, and every player, including Romero, has a role to play in ending the club’s 17-year trophy drought.
And if Romero does move on in the summer, he can leave with his head held high – provided he helps deliver something memorable before then.
Because truthfully, his exit has felt inevitable for a while now, and it’s hard to truly blame him for keeping one eye on what comes next.
