Man Utd now want £64m Portuguese star to replace £47m United ace, the "preferred" one - report
Manchester United are planning to sign a new goalkeeper during the summer transfer window, according to Correio da Manha (page 28).
The Red Devils have had a dismal Premier League campaign. They suffered their 15th defeat against Wolverhampton Wanderers on Sunday.
United manager Ruben Amorim may want several upgrades for next season, and a new goalkeeper could be one of his main priorities.
Correio da Manha claim that United have been keeping a close eye on Porto goalkeeper Diogo Costa.
The 25-year-old is the ‘preferred’ choice to replace Onana between the sticks for the Red Devils.
Manchester City are also admirers of the Portuguese star and seem prepared to pay £50 million.
Costa has a £64m release clause in his contract. Porto hope to receive a sum closer to that figure.
United unlikely to pursue a deal for Costa
The Red Devils have had concerns with the Profit and Sustainability Rules (PSR) for some time.
The club had a huge spending spree last summer, but we may not see a repeat without player sales.
There could be some leeway if United qualify for the Champions League by winning the Europa League.
Still, we don’t see the club spending £64m to purchase a new goalkeeper ahead of next season.
United are prepared to cut their losses on Onana, who cost them £47m from Inter Milan in 2023. They are open to selling him for £20m during the next transfer window.
In our view, the club could pursue a cost-effective solution. Espanyol’s Joan Garcia could be targeted.
The hierarchy have sounded out their interest in the 23-year-old, who is one of La Liga’s best keepers.
Garcia has excelled with his reflexes, long ball distribution and ability to make regular high claims.
Arsenal are also keen on his services but United should have an advantage over the Gunners.
Mikel Arteta’s side only see him as a back-up option behind first-choice goalkeeper David Raya.
United can lure him to Old Trafford with the guarantee of a starting position next season.
Garcia has a release clause of just £21.5m in his contract and would be a brilliant bargain signing.
