Man Utd plot sensational return for Andre Onana replacement who left Old Trafford as a teenager nearly a decade ago
Manchester United are considering a sensational move to bring back Serbian goalkeeper Vanja Milinkovic-Savic, according to TMW.
The Red Devils could be on the market for a new goalkeeper in the summer, with Andre Onana’s long-term future called into question.
The Cameroon international keeper is once again making the headlines but for all the wrong reasons.
Onana made two high-profile errors that cost United a massive win in their Europa League quarter-final first-leg clash against Olympique Lyon.
That was after a war of words with ex-United midfielder Nemanja Matic, who labelled Onana as the worst keeper in the club’s history.
Onana ended up proving Matic right and was dropped for the 4-1 humiliation at the hands of Newcastle United in the Premier League.
Ruben Amorim opted to go with Altay Bayindir, but the Turkish keeper wasn’t much of an upgrade on the beleaguered Onana.
With United’s current crop struggling to prove they deserve a place in the club, a new goalkeeper has become a priority this summer, which is where Milinkovic-Savic comes in.
The 28-year-old has been one of Torino’s standout performers in Serie A this season, placing him on the radar of several clubs in Europe.
United may even face competition from noisy neighbours Manchester City, who have also sounded out an interest in the Serbian keeper.
Milinkovic-Savic had a spell in United’s youth ranks.
He joined as a 17-year-old but was forced to cut ties with the Premier League powerhouse after just two years due to work permit issues.
Milinkovic-Savic has managed nine clean sheets in 31 Serie A games this season, averaging 3.7 saves per match (77%).
He doesn’t fit the profile of a ball-playing keeper, evidenced by his 35% success rate with long passes, but he more than makes up for it with his shot-stopping ability.
Milinkovic-Savic is valued at £10 million on Transfermarkt and has just one year left on his contract with Torino, so the Serie A club could be forced to cash in this summer.
However, aside from City, United may also have to fend off Al Hilal, with the Saudi Arabian club looking to reunite the Milinkovic-Savic brothers.
