Postecoglou reveals how Romero and Vicario impressed him after Spurs errors
Ange Postecoglou has broken his silence on the defensive blunders involving Cristian Romero and Guglielmo Vicario, just days before Spurs’ huge Europa League clash against Eintracht Frankfurt.
Watching the Tottenham Hotspur clash against Wolverhampton Wanderers as a fan, you were either left shocked or not even bothered, as such performances have become a common theme this season.
Of course, Tottenham supporters aren’t strangers to individual errors, but Sunday’s Premier League showing was particularly chaotic, with each of Wolves’ four goals bearing the fingerprints of a Spurs mistake.
Guglielmo Vicario was at fault for two of those, enduring a poor first half in which his handling of the ball under pressure, especially when dealing with crosses into the box, was exposed time and again.

As if Vicario’s errors weren’t enough, Cristian Romero added to the calamity with a costly lapse in concentration, losing the ball in an area he should have been in complete control of.
With the crucial Europa League quarter-final first leg against Eintracht Frankfurt looming, Ange Postecoglou has now addressed the disjointed display from two of his most experienced players.
Speaking to Football.London, the Tottenham boss insisted it was better the mistakes happened on Sunday rather than Thursday night, adding that both players have responded in the way expected of leaders.
He said: “It was a tough afternoon and they were disappointed. But the thing about both of them is they don’t shy away from that responsibility.
“They owned up to it, the mistakes were on them but once we reviewed it and put it to bed, they trained the next day with the mentality you expect them to as leaders and experienced players.
“I guess if they were going to make errors like that, it’s better they did it on Sunday than tomorrow night.
“It’s better they don’t make them at all but they’re human beings, these things happen. Both have got a really good mentality, they’re both strong leaders, they’re both strong individuals.
“They weren’t hiding away from the fact that they made those mistakes; they owned up to them, which is no surprise to me. And I think they’ll go out tomorrow night not thinking about that but again, thinking about the opportunity for us.”
Romero and Vicario expected to start for Tottenham vs Frankfurt
Given the magnitude of Thursday’s clash, the margin for error is virtually non-existent, yet there’s little doubt Ange Postecoglou will stick with both Cristian Romero and Guglielmo Vicario at the heart of his defence.
However, there is a much-needed boost on the defensive front, as Kevin Danso has been spotted back in training ahead of the tie and is expected to make the bench on Thursday.
Micky van de Ven, who was didn’t feature against Wolverhampton Wanderers, is also expected to return to the starting line-up, which should strengthen Tottenham’s backline and provide a more balanced setup.
