Man United have made enquiry about 'special' goalkeeper who plays like Ederson
Manchester United could seek to bolster their goalkeeping department in the summer.
First-choice Andre Onana has failed to convince, and United could explore selling him.
Tom Heaton is also set to leave, while Altay Bayindir will likely seek more game time elsewhere.
United have been linked with several goalkeepers, the latest being Eintracht Frankfurt’s Kaua Santos.
Director of recruitment Christopher Vivell spoke to Frankfurt’s sporting director Markus Krosche about Santos during their Europa League quarter-final first leg clash with Tottenham Hotspur last week, according to Sport Bild.
United had previously shown interest in the him. They will now have to face competition from Tottenham and other clubs for his signature.
Described as ‘special’ by teammate, Robin Koch, Santos joined Frankfurt from Brazilian side Flamengo in the summer of 2023.
His style of play has been likened to that of Manchester City goalkeeper Ederson.
He played mainly for the Eagles’ reserve team last season and has played for the first team this term. He has made 13 appearances across all competitions.
The 22-year-old has played second fiddle to Kevin Trapp for most of this term but has been in goal recently due to the injury to the Germany international.
Santos has used that opportunity to impress and may have usurped Trapp as Frankfurt’s first-choice goalkeeper.
He was in superb form against Spurs, helping Frankfurt to secure a 1-1 draw. Germany legend Lothar Matthaus dubbed his saves in the game ‘world-class’.
Despite his limited game time, the Brazilian has done enough to attract the interest of top European clubs, including United.
However, the Mancunian giants may find it financially challenging to sign the talented shot-stopper.
Frankfurt extended his contract to 2030 last October. They have ‘decided internally’ not to sell Santos for less than £51.6 million, which could prove excessive for United.
