Tottenham may sack Ange Postecoglou even if he ends 17-year trophy drought
The latest reports now suggest that Tottenham Hotspur could sack Ange Postecoglou, even if he wins the Europa League, amid poor Premier League form.
It really hasn’t worked out for Ange Postecoglou in his second season in charge at Tottenham Hotspur.
The promise and progress of his debut campaign has given way to mounting frustration and stuttering results.
The Australian has had to deal with a brutal injury crisis this season – at one point losing over ten first-team players – which certainly disrupted any kind of rhythm or consistency he was trying to build.
Despite that, Tottenham stuck by him. They rode through the worst of it and now, with key players returning, the expectation was for the results to turn – but they haven’t.
And with performances still lacking conviction, belief in Postecoglou’s long-term future is beginning to wane.
Tottenham could sack Ange Postecoglou even after Europa League glory
Sunday’s 4-2 defeat to Wolverhampton Wanderers in the Premier League marked Ange Postecoglou’s 17th league defeat of the campaign.
That result leaves the Lilywhites just two points above 17th-placed West Ham United, with six matches remaining. For a club still harbouring ambitions of Champions League football, that simply isn’t good enough.
And now, according to the Mirror, Tottenham Hotspur have begun drawing up contingency plans, reportedly shortlisting three potential replacements for the Australian coach.
It is stated that Fulham’s Marco Silva, Bournemouth’s Andoni Iraola and Crystal Palace’s Oliver Glasner are names under consideration.
The same report also claims there’s now genuine concern at board level that even a Europa League triumph may not be enough to save Postecoglou’s job, with pressure continuing to mount around him.
Tottenham vs Eintracht Frankfurt: A crunch Europa League tie awaits Spurs
Spurs return to Europa League action on Thursday night as they look to get past Bundesliga side Eintracht Frankfurt and keep their hopes of silverware alive.
The tie remains finely balanced after the German side snatched a draw in the first leg at the Tottenham Hotspur Stadium, leaving everything to play for in the return fixture.
While it’s becoming increasingly likely that Ange Postecoglou may be moved on regardless of how the European campaign ends, both he and his players will be desperate to give it everything in a bid to finally end Tottenham’s long-standing trophy drought.
