Ange Postecoglou tells Tottenham fans to ignore reports in the German press

0 2

Ange Postecoglou has reacted to rumours suggesting that Mathys Tel could potentially return to Bayern Munich this summer and has explained the reasons behind the forward’s struggles at Tottenham so far this season.

When the Frenchman arrived on loan in the January window, it was seen as a real coup for the Lilywhites, with reports indicating that Tottenham beat Arsenal and Chelsea to Tel’s signature.

However, the forward is yet to give Spurs fans a lot to be excited about, having found the back of the net just three times since arriving at the club.

In fact, it emerged a couple of days ago that Tottenham have decided against activating the £45m option to buy Tel, with the Premier League side potentially set to try and renegotiate a discounted fee with Bayern.

Ange Postecoglou sets the record straight on Mathys Tel

Postecoglou has now brushed aside the speculation swerving about the 19-year-old’s future, insisting that the newcomer remains an important player for his side.

The Australian pointed out that Tel arrived at Tottenham having played very little football in the first half of the campaign and revealed that the forward is now showing signs of being up to speed.

When asked about reports from Germany suggesting that Tel might return to Bayern, Postecoglou told Football.London: “Yeah, I mean don’t believe everything that comes out of German press. Any press really these days. I shouldn’t say press but just information in general. The days of it being double-checked, triple-checked, triple-sourced are long gone.

“No, Mathys is important for us. When he came in, people forget, he hadn’t played hardly at all at Bayern and we threw him in. He was playing game after game after game and it was always going to be a big ask for him, but that’s the challenge he had.

“Now we’re working with him at training, we really believe he can make an impact and physically he’s much better now. He’s in a much better place and he’s getting to understand our game a lot better, so we’ll keep working with him. I still think he’s an exciting talent and happy to have him.”

Tottenham’s Premier League rivals eyeing a summer move for Tel

If Spurs do not pounce on the France Under-21 international, they potentially risk losing him out to their Premier League rivals.

Just a couple of days ago, a report indicated that Chelsea are ready to pounce on Tel if Tottenham do not activate the purchase option this summer.

It has also been suggested by some sources that Man United could reignite their interest in Tel in the summer after missing out on him in January.
