Vinicius Junior could reportedly open the door for Erling Haaland’s arrival at Real Madrid
Erling Haaland recently committed his future to Manchester City with a record-breaking contract extension through 2035, seemingly putting to rest any speculation about a move away from the Premier League champions. However, new reports suggest that the door may still be open for a transfer to Real Madrid—thanks, in part, to Vinicius Junior.
Vinicius’ representatives and Real Madrid have confirmed that talks are underway regarding a new long-term deal. Still, persistent links to the Saudi Pro League continue to cast a shadow over the Brazilian star’s future.
According to Sky Sports‘ Florian Plettenberg, if Vinicius ultimately departs for Saudi Arabia, Haaland would become Real Madrid’s “absolute top target.” Such a move would likely involve a record-breaking transfer fee from Saudi Arabia, which could make a deal for Haaland financially feasible for Los Blancos.
Despite winning FIFA’s The Best award following an exceptional 2023–24 campaign, Vinicius has struggled to maintain that form this season. His recent dip in performances has reportedly caused unrest within the squad and among fans. In this context, Plettenberg notes that a transfer to the Saudi Pro League remains a real possibility, with several Bundesliga and European insiders confirming Real Madrid’s awareness of this potential scenario.
Haaland’s price tag remains a major hurdle
Real Madrid has long held interest in Haaland, dating back to his Borussia Dortmund days. At the time, Karim Benzema’s presence blocked any serious negotiations to bring in a long-term replacement. But with the possibility of a massive cash injection from Vinicius’ sale, the club could now be in a position to reignite its pursuit of the Norwegian striker.
One obstacle remains: Haaland’s new deal. The January 2025 contract extension removed all previously existing release clauses, making any transfer negotiation significantly more complex. According to multiple UK outlets, the only potential exit clause wouldn’t be activated until 2029.
Haaland’s current market value stands at €200 million (per Transfermarkt)—a figure few clubs in the world can realistically meet. However, a blockbuster offer for Vinicius could put Real Madrid in a unique position to seriously consider a future move for the Manchester City talisman.
