Tottenham will have to lift Europa League without the football gods – Ange Postecoglou
Ange Postecoglou has given a funny response when asked about the lack of fortune his side enjoyed against Eintracht Frankfurt after Tottenham were unable to find what would have been a deserved match-winner in the Europa League quarter-final first leg.
Spurs showed on Thursday how dangerous a team they can be when things click for them on the pitch, which has not happened on many occasions this season.
It was one-way traffic for much of the second period, with the home side hitting the woodwork twice and Frankfurt goalkeeper Kaua Santos producing some fine saves to keep the Lilywhites out.
The Tottenham boss admitted that he became particularly resigned to his side’s bad luck after one moment which occurred late in the game.
Ange Postecoglou says footballing gods are not on Tottenham’s side
Tottenham managed one more huge chance deep into stoppage time as Micky van de Ven had a free header with the whole goal gaping after Rodrigo Bentancur knocked Pedro Porro’s free-kick back across goal.
However, the Dutchman somehow managed to head the ball into his own foot and the bouncing ball gave Santos just enough time to get back into position and parry it over the bar.
When asked if, at that particular moment, it felt like the football gods were against Tottenham, Postecoglou told Football.London: “Like I said, I’m resigned to the fact that the football gods have got their eyes elsewhere this year.
“They’re obviously busy with other clubs and other managers so whatever we get we’re going to have to do it without them this year.”
Will Spurs come to rue their missed chances?
Given the performance that Spurs delivered, especially in the second half, they will feel that they should be carrying at least a two-goal lead into the return leg.
While the Tottenham players can take confidence from their dominance, the game at Deutsche Bank Park will be very different as Frankfurt are a different beast at home in the Europa League while Spurs have been poor away from home this season.
Postecoglou will be hoping that the missed chances do not come back to haunt his side in Germany next Thursday.
