Who is Vinai Venkatesham? All you need to know about Tottenham’s new CEO
Tottenham Hotspur have announced the appointment of Vinai Venkatesham as their new chief executive officer. Here is all that you know about Spurs’ new CEO, his experience, and the responsibilities he is expected to have at the North London club.
Tottenham Hotspur have confirmed that Vinai Venkatesham is set to be the latest addition to the club’s board, having agreed to join as the new CEO at the end of this season.
Venkatesham held the same position at Spurs’ fierce rivals, Arsenal, for over a decade before resigning last year, and he has now made the controversial move across the North London divide.
Who is Vinai Venkatesham?
Venkatesham held a series of roles at Arsenal right since 2010 and helped drive significant progress on and off the pitch at the club.
For the vast majority of his time with the Gunners, he served as their CEO before deciding to part ways with the club last year.
He also worked at the London 2012 Olympic and Paralympic Games and is currently a non-executive director of the British Olympic Association.
The 44-year-old was also formerly a member of the board and executive committee of the European Club Association (ECA) and thus brings extensive experience in both sporting and commercial operations to Tottenham.
What is Venkatesham’s role at Tottenham?
The Athletic reveal that Venkatesham will take full responsibility for all operational matters on and off the field when he gets started at Tottenham this summer.
He is thus expected to work very closely with chairman Daniel Levy over the coming years.
He is also expected to be heavily involved in stakeholder management with bodies such as the Premier League and European Club Association (ECA).
Why Venkatesham is a real coup for Tottenham and Daniel Levy
According to the same outlet, Venkatesham and Levy have had a strong relationship for a number of years, which is why the Spurs chairman was keen to bring him through the door.
The publication adds that there is ‘mutual confidence’ that Venkatesham and Levy can form ‘an ideal partnership to improve all areas of the club’.
The Athletic also mentions that Venkatesham received a number of offers since departing the Emirates, including opportunities to work at other Premier League clubs, in the United States, and Saudi Arabia.
However, he rejected those in favour of a move to N17, with his appointment seen as a real coup for Levy and the club.
What does this appointment mean for Tottenham’s structure?
Tottenham have an interesting structure in place with Scott Munn working as the chief football officer and Johan Lange as the club’s technical director.
However, the club are currently without a chief commercial officer since Todd Kline vacated that role last year to take over at Chelsea, with the American being unable to help Spurs finalise a naming rights partner during his time at the club.
Venkatesham’s arrival as the CEO potentially signals a reshuffle in the club’s hierarchy, with The Athletic suggesting that responsibilities could be changed at the top.
