Ange Postecoglou reveals the one Tottenham argument he can never win

0 17

In his recent media duties ahead of the Eintracht Frankfurt clash, Ange Postecoglou was asked whether winning a trophy would finally shut up his Tottenham critics. His response was as blunt as they come – “There’s no winning that argument”.

Ange Postecoglou has been feeling the heat from all angles in recent months.

It doesn’t take a genius to figure out why either, as the Australian has now lost more Premier League games than he’s won, with Tottenham suffering 16 defeats in 31 games, while winning just 11.

That record, coupled with Spurs’ current league position and points tally, means Postecoglou is on course to finish as one of the worst-performing managers in Tottenham’s recent history.

Ange Postecoglou on his Tottenham future

Given the poor run of form, Tottenham Hotspur have understandably drawn up a list of potential managerial replacements.

Postecoglou himself recently admitted that the names being linked to his job are “outstanding”. However, some reports have claimed that there is still a chance Postecoglou could keep his job should Spurs win the Europa League this season.

But now, speaking in his latest round of media duties, Postecoglou has made it clear that even winning silverware won’t change public perception — not in his eyes anyway. The Spurs boss admitted that he “can’t win the argument”, no matter the outcome.

He said: “I just think you can’t win the argument of convincing people. Even if we win [the Europa League], I am gone anyway, that’s just the general sentiment of the people.

“If you try to use that as a motivation, you are not going to win anyway. It’s got to be something more in it for us.

“For us, what’s most important is that we have been through a tough time but we are still in a position to make an impact. I just think there’s a real determination to take this opportunity.”

Europa League hopes could define Postecoglou’s season

Winning the Europa League would be massive for Tottenham, a club that hasn’t lifted that particular trophy since the 1983/84 season. It would also finally end the club’s 17-year wait for silverware.

It’s definitely achievable for the Australian, but he’ll need to take it one game at a time. With a two-legged tie against German side Eintracht Frankfurt up next, Postecoglou must find a way to secure victory if he’s to give himself any chance of reaching the final.

And if he does go all the way and win it? Well, it might not save his job — but it would at least give him a proper parting shot.
