Red Sox Trade Highly Drafted Pitcher, Land Multi-Faceted Return

Quinn Priester’s stint in the Red Sox organization proved to be brief.

Boston on Monday traded Priester to Milwaukee in exchange for minor league outfielder Yophery Rodriguez, a Competitive Balance Round A selection in the 2025 First-Year Player Draft and a player to be named later or cash considerations. The Red Sox acquired Priester last July in a trade that sent infielder Nick Yorke to the Pittsburgh Pirates.

The 18th overall pick in the 2019 MLB Draft, Priester at one point in Boston’s spring training appeared to be gaining ground toward potentially claiming a spot on Alex Cora’s Opening Day roster. The right-hander ultimately opened the campaign in Triple-A Worcester, where he allowed two runs over four innings in his first start of the season April 3.

MLB.com listed Rodriguez as the Brewers’ seventh-best prospect at the time of the trade. The 19-year-old got off to an excellent start to the season for High-A Wisconsin, where he went 5-for-12 with a double, a triple and three runs scored over three games. To date, the 2023 international free agent signing has played in 165 minor league games and owns a .254 average with nine triples, 13 home runs, 19 stolen bases, 37 doubles and 96 RBIs.

By trading Priester, the Red Sox now have one spot open on their 40-man roster.
