Man Utd considering move for Championship goalkeeper to challenge Onana
Manchester United will explore the market for a new goalkeeper in the summer.
Andre Onana has been inconsistent this season, and Altay Bayindir has failed to challenge the Cameroonian for a place in the starting line-up.
Bayindir is also likely to leave, making it crucial for the Red Devils to sign another goalkeeper to provide competition for Onana.
United’s search for a new shot-stopper has led them to the Championship, where they have set their sights on Preston North End’s Freddie Woodman, according to The Sun journalist Alan Nixon.
Nixon claims United have checked on the former England youth international and Blackburn Rovers’ Aynsley Pears.
After helping England win the 2017 U20 World Cup, Woodman’s career has not progressed as expected.
He began his youth career at Crystal Palace before moving to Newcastle United.
However, he could not get enough game time with the Magpies’ first team and spent several loan spells away before joining Preston permanently in 2020.
The 28-year-old has since become Preston’s first-choice goalkeeper, making 138 appearances for the club, keeping 44 clean sheets and conceding 179 goals.
He will be a free agent in the summer, and his contractual situation has alerted Man United.
United should avoid signing Woodman
While the potential to sign Woodman on a free transfer may appeal to United, especially given their financial constraints, the move may not be right.
Woodman has not shown the kind of form that would justify a move to a club of United’s stature.
Despite keeping 12 clean sheets in the Championship this season, only five goalkeepers have a worse goals prevented tally than him.
He is not as good as Onana, and if United are serious about strengthening their goalkeeping department this summer, they should consider other options.
Espanyol’s Joan Garcia would be a perfect acquisition for the Red Devils, though the club could face fierce competition from Premier League rivals Arsenal.
