Manchester United are gearing up for a mouth-watering Premier League derby against Manchester City at Old Trafford today.

Reputed journalist Fabrizio Romano has confirmed on X that “Godwill Kukonki will make the bench for today’s Derby against Manchester City.

“He’s considered as top talent by the club and Ruben Amorim.”

The 17-year-old prodigy was first included in a matchday squad back in December, marking a major milestone in his young career.

Head coach Ruben Amorim has not held back in his praise, revealing he has been “impressed” by Kukonki’s development and maturity.

With Matthijs de Ligt nursing an injury and Ayden Heaven still on the road to recovery, the door has opened for Kukonki to step into the senior squad once again.

While a place in the starting XI is highly unlikely, his presence on the bench speaks volumes about the faith Amorim has in him.

Harry Maguire is expected to replace De Ligt at the heart of the defence with Noussair Mazraoui and Leny Yoro supporting him in the back three.

The teenage sensation has impressed in United’s youth ranks, seamlessly operating as both a left-sided centre-back and a left-back.

He is a technically gifted defender with quick recovery speed and a commanding presence in the air.

Amorim loves to work with young players, providing Kukonki with the perfect mentor to launch his senior career.

Kukonki joined United at the tender age of five and inked a scholarship deal last summer.

United will be keen to secure a win over Manchester City today.

Doing a double over their fierce rivals would be a sweet and symbolic moment for the Old Trafford faithful who have stood by their team through a turbulent 2024–25 season.
