Opinion: How much Tottenham should charge for Cristian Romero this summer

0 8

With Cristian Romero eager to play Champions League football, Tottenham now face a decision— either tie him down to a new deal, or show him the exit door. But if he’s sold, what should the club be asking for?

Cristian Romero has reportedly stalled on contract talks with Tottenham, with sources suggesting his desire to play in Europe’s top competition as the reason behind the delay.

Naturally, this has left Spurs in a tricky position, as they’re keen to keep hold of the defender but won’t be held to ransom.

Of course, Tottenham Hotspur have made their Romero stance clear: sign a new deal or leave. Spurs have even put forward a contract offer to Romero, said to be significantly improved, showing how much they value the Argentine international.

With uncertainty over his future growing, it’s no surprise that other clubs have started to circle. And now, a European giant has entered the mix.

Atletico Madrid make their move for Romero

As Romero hesitates, Atletico Madrid have reportedly stepped up their interest. The Spanish side are keen to bolster their defence this summer, and the World Cup winner is said to be high on their wishlist. Reports suggest Atletico have already made contact with the player’s representatives.

With Diego Simeone’s side sitting comfortably in La Liga’s top three, Champions League football is all but guaranteed.

That could be a major pull for Romero, who may see a move to Spain as the perfect opportunity to compete at the highest level.

However, as it stands, no decision has been made. Romero remains a Spurs player, and the Tottenham fanbase is divided on Romero’s transfer situation. Some believe it’s time to cash in, while others argue that losing another top player would be a huge mistake.

How much should Tottenham demand for Cristian Romero?

If Spurs do decide to sell, they must get the right price. Reports suggest Tottenham have lowered their valuation of Romero, with a player previously rated at £60 million now said to be worth around €40 million (£33 million). That’s laughable.

According to journalist Ben Jacobs, this lower valuation is due to Romero having just two years left on his current contract.

While that’s standard in the transfer market, it still doesn’t justify such a drastic drop in price. We’re talking about a world-class centre-back here.

Sure, losing him for free would be a disaster (Liverpool fans know all too well how that feels with Trent’s situation).

But even with two years left, Tottenham should be looking at a figure closer to £60-65 million—at the very least. Anything less would be a steal for Atletico and a blunder for Tottenham.

Let’s not forget, if he leaves, we’ll need a replacement. And with clubs knowing we’re desperate, they’ll hike their prices.

That’s why it’s crucial we sell at the right value. Romero is a top defender, a World Cup winner, and at 26, he’s in his prime.

If Tottenham Hotspur play their cards right, they could turn this situation into smart business. But sell for £33 million? No chance.
