Tottenham receive advice on long-term plan to replace Heung-min Son
Alan Hutton believes that Heung-min Son is past his prime but believes that Tottenham will opt for a different plan this summer rather than selling and replacing their captain.
Son has been extremely consistent for Tottenham Hotspur over the last decade but the forward has shown signs of decline this season, even though he has continued to make decisive contributions in the final third.
With the South Korean turning 33 this summer, many are understandably starting to question if he is now past his best.
Various outlets over recent months have suggested that Tottenham could cash in on Son this summer as the forward edges closer to the final year of his contract, but Hutton has suggested an alternative course.
Alan Hutton predicts what Spurs will do with captain Son
Hutton believes that Son is experiencing the inevitable drop off in sharpness and ability to recover that players do in their thirties.
The former Tottenham right-back believes that the Lilywhites will enter the market for a Son replacement this summer but suggested that the club could keep hold of their captain for one more year.
When asked if he sees the 32-year-old leaving Spurs this summer, Hutton told BetWay: “Unfortunately, it happens to all footballers. As you begin to reach 32, 33, 34, you’re not quite the same. Your body doesn’t recover the same, and it becomes a little bit more difficult.
“Looking in from the outside, he’s such a quality player, his bar has been set so high, and they heavily rely on the goals that he scores. And when you do reach your mid-thirties, you’re obviously going to have a drop-off at some stage. So, yes, have him in the squad. He didn’t play against Fulham, but there’s going to be games where you still need him.
“However, I think you also need to look to the future. Can they bring somebody in? Not necessarily to instantly replace him, but to lighten the load and help him out a little bit. I would imagine in the summer that they will be looking to strengthen the squad.”
Have Tottenham already found the heir to Heung-min Son?
Spurs might not have to enter the market for the South Korean’s replacement as they may already have a readymade replacement in their squad.
It has been reported by some sources that Mathys Tel is viewed as the successor to Son on Tottenham’s left, with the Frenchman seen as a player with immense promise by the decision-makers at Hotspur Way.
The 19-year-old has had a tough start to life at Spurs and whether he is able to live up to such a billing remains to be seen.
