Tottenham will be relieved by Cristian Romero reviews despite shocking error

0 7

Tottenham Hotspur vice-captain Cristian Romero had a bad lapse in concentration in his side’s World Cup qualifier on Tuesday, but he has still been praised by his national media for his solid performance.

A number of Tottenham players have been involved in some high-profile World Cup qualifiers over the course of the international break, none more than Cristian Romero.

The Spurs vice-captain played all 90 minutes as Argentina sealed their spot in next year’s World Cup with wins over both Uruguay and Brazil.

Romero made a poor error that was capitalised on by Matheus Cunha in the World Champions’ win over Brazil, but the press has been overwhelmingly positive about the centre-back’s display.

Argentine media react to Cristian Romero’s performance

In the end, Romero’s error did not cost his side as the Albiceleste emerged 4-1 winners on Tuesday, which was the Selecao’s heaviest loss to their bitter rivals since 1964.

However, the Tottenham man seemingly did not allow his first-half error to affect him and has earned praise for being an impassable wall for the rest of the encounter.

TyC Sport gave Romero an 8/10 and wrote: “He made an uncharacteristic error that led to Cunha’s goal, but it was his only mistake. Other than that, Cuti had a superb performance.”

Meanwhile, BOLAVIP rated him 6/10: “He made a gross error that led to Matheus Cunha’s goal, but he managed to recover and win convincingly in the individual duels.”

There was another 6/10 from Clarin who claimed: “Cuti must be regretting that gross error on Cunha’s goal because, apart from that play, he had a phenomenal game, anticipating and initiating several plays. He may be the best first-choice centre-back in the world.”

Did Argentina fail to follow Romero fitness plan?

It was reported last week that Argentine would only use Romero for one of their two matches during the international break.

The update explained that the Tottenham man was not deemed to be in a good enough physical condition to play both matches, given that he has only recently returned from a long-term injury layoff.

However, Argentina manager Lionel Scaloni handed the centre-back 90 minutes in both games, which might not please Ange Postecoglou.
