Watch: Tottenham’s Mathys Tel scores impressive brace for France U21

0 6

Mathys Tel showed on Monday just why there is so much hype surrounding him, with the on-loan Tottenham forward scoring two excellent goals as France Under-21s thrashed Slovakia 4-0.

Mathys Tel joined Tottenham at a tumultuous time, given all that has gone on both on and off the pitch at the North London club so far this season.

The 19-year-old is still adapting to his new surroundings and is yet to show too many glimpses of his quality in a Spurs shirt.

However, Ange Postecoglou is confident that Tel will evolve into a top-class player once he gets used to Tottenham’s system and the physicality of Premier League football.

Mathys Tel shows why Tottenham want to sign him

Wilson Odobert was the hero for France’s Under-21 side in their win over England last week, with Mathys Tel being restricted to a cameo from the bench in that fixture.

However, it was the Tottenham newcomer who got the nod to start on the left against Slovakia, with Odobert dropping to the bench.

Tel found the back of the net twice in the first half to ensure France took a healthy lead into the interval.

The Spurs forward cut in on the left-hand-side (where he started his last game for Tottenham) and curled one into the corner for his first goal. For the second, Tel showed great composure to lob the onrushing goalkeeper after being sent in behind.

Arnaud Kalimuendo then added two more goals in the second half to put the icing on the cake for the French side. Tel got 64 minutes under his belt before being replaced by Thierno Barry while Odobert came on as a 76-minute substitute.

Why Tel’s goals are great news for Spurs

Mathys Tel has looked short of confidence in his first couple of months at Tottenham and he needed a couple of goals to get some belief back.

Both of his finishes against Slovakia were excellent and showed why Postecoglou and others are convinced of the forward’s high ceiling.

Hopefully, the teenager can carry this momentum into the Premier League and have a strong end to the season with Tottenham.
