Five things we learned from Tottenham Legends vs AC Milan Glorie
The Tottenham Hotspur Stadium hosted a pulsating legends match between Spurs and AC Milan this afternoon, with Andrea Pirlo, Dimitar Berbatov, Robbie Keane and more taking to the pitch.
Let’s take a look at the five things we learned from the match:
Legends attack could give the Tottenham defence problems
Aaron Lennon and Jermain Defoe running in behind, Robbie Keane and Dimitar Berbatov pulling the strings – the current Tottenham team have struggled against worse this season. Both JD and Azza look like they could still comfortably play at a decent level today if they wanted to.
It was so nostalgic to see those classic jinking runs down the right from Lennon, entertaining a brand new generation of young Spurs fans in attendance today. Although Keane and Berba may not have as much in the legs as the other two, they still ooze class between the pockets, picking out balls over the top for fun. Roll back the years!
Three goals for Keano, one for Defoe, and two assists for Aaron Lennon. That would be a decent Fantasy Football haul that.
The return of Darude Sandstorm
Tottenham may have binned off Sandstorm for the senior team, but they brought it back this afternoon for every Spurs goal. I just didn’t expect to hear it so often! Darude must be racking up the copyright payments after today. Bring it back for the Europa League quarter-finals, I say.
Ledley King lasts 30 minutes on Tottenham return
Oh Ledley, Ledley, he’s only got one knee! He may be 13 years retired, but King still managed to get 30 minutes under his belt at the Tottenham Hotspur Stadium, captaining the team and earning a clean sheet against the likes of Andrea Pirlo. The Spurs legend – who made over 300 appearances in Lilywhite – got a standing ovation when he made way for Sebastien Bassong after the half-hour mark. He is still such a loved figure in North London, especially in a week when Sol Campbell made headlines speaking out against Tottenham.
Andrea Pirlo scores a free-kick at the Tottenham Hotspur Stadium
Yes, he was playing for the other team, but having Pirlo curl a free-kick into the top corner feels like a bit of a badge of honour. The diminutive Italian midfielder may be 45 now and struggled to deal with the physicality of the Beast that is Sandro, but he still has all the technique in those magic feet. As the old saying goes, the football never leaves you. Seeing random moments of nostalgic brilliance like that is what these Legends games are all about!
Give it a few more years
Seeing so many of the Martin Jol/Harry Redknapp era out on the pitch again was so fun and nostalgic. It got me thinking – and prepare to feel old – give it a few more years and we might see some of the Poch era involved. Toby Alderweireld, Jan Vertonghen, Mousa Dembele, Victor Wanyama, Hugo Lloris… there are tears in my eyes already!
A great event to raise money for charity
It was great to see tens of thousands of people out this afternoon to at least fill the bottom half of the stadium for a great cause. All money raised will go toward the Tottenham Hotspur Foundation, which is the Club’s official charitable body, and Fondazione Milan.
Tottenham say the money will be used to: ‘Inspire and empower thousands of people living within our local communities through programmes spanning football and multi-sports, health and wellbeing, employability and education.
‘Beneficiaries of the community chest will include the Essex & Herts Air Ambulance and mental health provision for students at the London Academy of Excellence Tottenham, the Club-sponsored Sixth Form College on the Tottenham Hotspur Stadium campus.’
You can still donate through the Tottenham Hotspur website.
