Ange Postecoglou told his Tottenham Hotspur job is hanging by a thread

0 9

Jamie O’Hara believes that Ange Postecoglou is now clinging to his job by his fingernails following Tottenham’s defeat against Fulham on Sunday, insisting that the Australian will not have any way back if Spurs lose a big upcoming game.

One can understand why Tottenham Hotspur would want to prioritise the Europa League, given that they have nothing but pride to play for in the Premier League this season, with the Spurs boss unsurprisingly rotating his side for their trip to Craven Cottage.

Unfortunately for Postecoglou, Tottenham took their eye off the ball and slipped to their 15th defeat of their league campaign. Spurs are now 14th in the Premier League table.

O’Hara has now explained why this latest loss against Fulham is particularly damaging to Postecoglou’s long-term future at N17.

Jame O’Hara says Ange Postecoglou is on thin ice

The pundit acknowledged that Spurs’ primary focus is on the Europa League, but he insisted that the Premier League form will have a big impact on Tottenham’s ultimate decision on Postecoglou’s future.

With key players coming back from injury, O’Hara suggested that the Australian is running out of excuses and opined that the club may be forced to pull the plug on the project if they are eliminated by Eintracht Frankfurt from the Europa League.

The former Spurs midfielder told Sky Sports after Fulham’s 2-0 win over Tottenham: “A really poor performance again from Spurs. They’ve been inconsistent all season. Lacklustre in possession, no real edge to our game, no bite.

“Fulham are a good side, and they’re well organised, but you’ve got to take the game to them. I understand we’ve got the Europa League, and we have put all of our eggs in that basket, but the Premier League is bread and butter.

“The standard of the performances in the Premier League this season is nowhere near good enough, and I think Ange is clinging onto his job right now. We’ve got to play Frankfurt in the quarter-finals [of the Europa League] – they’re a good team, they’re fourth [in the Bundesliga] at the moment.

“That is a tough game. I think if we go out then, it’s probably ‘see you later’ to Ange Postecoglou at Spurs. I don’t see a way back. Is he getting the best out of these players now? We’re getting players back fit.

“The second goal we conceded today – I’m a massive fan of Djed Spence, I really like him, he’s done really well since he’s come in – but the defending for the goal is absolutely shocking.”

Alarm bells will be ringing at Tottenham Hotspur

Even if Tottenham somehow create history by winning the Europa League this season, serious questions would still have to be raised about the club’s league form.

There have been next to no improvements when it comes to performance levels away from home and that is something that the Spurs hierarchy will consider while making their decision on Postecoglou’s future.

There is little evidence at the moment to suggest that the 59-year-old can consistently deliver results in the Premier League and take the club where they want to be.
