Tottenham icon Dele Alli breaks silence on shock red card after 748 absence

0 4

Dele Alli has reacted rather interestingly after seeing his fairytale comeback turn into a nightmare against AC Milan on Saturday, with the Tottenham midfielder coming under fire from his own manager after being sent off.

Tottenham Hotspur fans have been waiting for a long time to see Dele back out on the pitch, with the attacking midfielder’s injury woes sidelining him for over two years.

The 28-year-old finally made his long-awaited debut for Como on Saturday after joining the Serie A club back in January, coming on as an 81st-minute substitute in his side’s 2-1 defeat at the San Siro.

However, it proved to be an evening to forget as Dele was shown a red card for a challenge from behind on AC Milan midfielder Ruben Loftus-Cheek’s calf.

Tottenham friendship intact between Dele Alli and Kyle Walker

Spurs allegiances were shown as Kyle Walker pleaded with the referee to show some leniency, but those pleas fell on deaf ears as the midfielder was given his marching orders in injury time.

The former Spurs man has now taken to social media to state that it was a bittersweet night, expressing his delight at returning to action, but admitting that it was not how he planned the day to go.

Cesc Fabregas blasts Dele’s grave mistake

The midfielder certainly did not get any sympathy from his manager, Cesc Fabregas, who insisted that a player of his experience should have known better than to make that sort of challenge.

The Como boss blasted the 28-year-old for costing his side an opportunity to push for a late equaliser.

Fabregas said about the red card (via Football Italia): “It was at that moment when Milan went 2-1 up and Sergi Roberto was meant to come on, but I’d prefer to give him another two weeks to train so he can be ready to start against Empoli. Dele Alli is a player who can score goals, he perhaps didn’t deserve this opportunity because he has only been working with us for two weeks and has a lot to improve.

“It is a grave mistake, one that we should not see from a player of his experience. It was a clear red card, there’s nothing to be said about that, he left the team down to 10 men during a crucial moment when we were pushing for 2-2. That is the most negative thing about this evening, but we keep going.”
