Report: Farnborough 2 Welling United 1

0 3

Farnborough started brightly in the very early minutes, but it was straight into action for the first time Welling had an attack, as they struck a sixth minute lead when Josh Redfearn guided Gene Kennedy’s cross into the net.

From there it was all Farnborough however, as Jonny Stuttle proved to be the main threat for Farnborough as ever, as his volleyed effort flied just over the bar.

It was Farnborough dominance after Welling’s early opener, as the hosts had many chances to find an equaliser to peg the relegation-stricken visitors back.

On the eve of his 22nd birthday, Joe Haigh found himself the first man to be in the book, following a foul to stop a dangerous Welling counter attack.

It proved to be delight for Spencer Day’s trust in Matty Macarthur following a scramble in the Welling box from an Ollie Robinson throw – which the Boro faithful get to see for another year from his extension – and Macarthur was on the end to smash home.

It was a controversial ending to the first half, as referee Stacey Pearson denied Farnborough a penalty, whilst Jonny Stuttle was left on the floor, bewildered inside the penalty area after battling for possession with Jack Burchell.

HALF-TIME: Farnborough 1 Welling United 1

It was a tactical substitution during the break as Alfie Tuck replaced a quiet Richard Chin, which proved to be a well-executed plan from the Farnborough staff.

It was an early impact from Alfie Tuck, whose effort was batted off the line by Rhys Lovett in the Welling net.

It took until the 67th minute for the next chance, as Farnborough looked to be controlling possession, waiting for the right moment to pounce.

This moment was found just five minutes later, as Jonny Stuttle expertly finished inside the box after a scramble, following up Alfie Pavey’s strike to give the hosts the lead.

A brilliant chance for a Farnborough third came late on, as Jonny Stuttle found his lay-off to Alfie Pavey to be hit just too hard for the loanee to control.

Spencer Day’s men look ahead to perhaps the toughest challenge of the season, as they face an Eastbourne Borough side who are undefeated at home this season. It’ll be a challenge, but follow the boys away and be the 12th man!
