Red Sox’s Garrett Crochet Reacts To Earning Opening Day Start
Garrett Crochet has yet to debut for the Red Sox, but we’ve already learned that he has a pretty stoic personality.
We received another example on Saturday.
Red Sox manager Alex Cora officially named his starter for Opening Day on March 27, and you wouldn’t have any idea who it was when talking to the 25-year-old. Crochet — who received the honor, by the way — had to be asked specifically about his feelings regarding the news before opening up.
“Not to downplay it, but it’s just another start,” Crochet said on Saturday, per video shared by NESN. “It doesn’t matter when my first one was going to be, it just happens to be Opening Day. I’m excited about that, and I hope to shoulder all of the responsibilities that come with it with pride and lead this team.”
It’s been a toss-up who would start on Opening Day each of the last several seasons, with Chris Sale, Corey Kluber and Brayan Bello receiving the last three nods, respectively.
Crochet shouldn’t be expected to pass the honor any time soon, especially if he gets that contract extension everyone has been keeping an eye on. The Red Sox are surely hoping so, anyway.
