Tottenham fans will love what Ange Postecoglou just said about Wilson Odobert

0 8

Ange Postecoglou has reserved special praise for Tottenham’s Wilson Odobert, insisting that there is a lot more to come from him over the coming weeks and months as he works his way up to full fitness.

Some Tottenham Hotspur fans would have been surprised when they saw Ange Postecoglou’s teamsheet on Thursday for the second leg against AZ Alkmaar.

In what was the biggest game of the club’s season, and arguably his tenure as coach, the Australian chose to start Wilson Odobert over both Brennan Johnson and January signing, Mathys Tel.

The former Burnley man repaid his manager’s faith, looking extremely threatening all game on the right and scoring two important goals to help the Lilywhites seal progress to the quarterfinal of the Europa League.

Ange Postecoglou says there is more to come from Odobert

While the experience of Cristian Romero, James Maddison and Guglielmo Vicario was crucial for Spurs on the big occasion, it was pointed out to Postecoglou that it was his young guns who stood up and grabbed the game by the scruff of the neck.

When asked if he was pleased to see Lucas Bergvall and Wilson Odobert shine, the Australian told Football.London: “Yeah, massive, brilliant for us, brilliant for the club, like I keep saying, we’ve got some really exciting talent. Lucas is growing all the time.

“People are getting a glimpse of what Wilson’s all about. Shame what’s happened to him this year, and he’s still working his way from fitness. I just thought the whole group handled it really well.”

Postecoglou confessed that he was very excited when Odobert arrived last summer, claiming that there is a lot more to come from the 20-year-old once he works his way up to full fitness.

When asked how important the goals were for Odobert’s confidence, the Tottenham boss responded: “Super pleased for him because he’s worked awfully hard.

“I’d be surprised if I have to explain why I selected him, if you didn’t see that today… I was excited when we signed him. He’s one of these players who has the ability to take players on, find space, great technician and super pleased for him to get his goals. He’s worked hard silently to get back in the team.

“Obviously, he came to a new club, a big club and a big move for him and it didn’t work out for him through no fault of his own, through the injury and it’s been frustrating for me not to be able to showcase him and know how much he can develop and that’s just the starting point for him.

“He’s still working his way to full fitness. When you look at the likes of him and Lucas and Archie and two or three others we’ve got, there’s some enormously exciting talent there.”

Wilson Odobert provides a point of difference for Tottenham

Odobert is very different to Tottenham’s other wide players as he likes to take players on and get past them, which is something Spurs have missed in the frontline.

The winger’s injury absence has not received as much spotlight as the injuries to other high-profile players, but the former Burnley man has arguably been as big a miss for the Lilywhites as any other player this season.

Having a wide player like Odobert who is willing to run at players adds a lot more balance to the Tottenham frontline, which has looked a bit one-dimensional and lacking in ideas over recent months.
