COSAFA members elected to CAF EXCO, Dr Motsepe re-elected CAF President

Feizal Sidat of Mozambique and Samir Sobha from Mauritius were elected on Wednesday to the Confédération Africaine de Football’s executive committee after polling at CAF’s 14th Extraordinary General Assembly held in Cairo on Wednesday, while Kanizat Ibrahim from the Comoros Islands will serve on the FIFA Council.

South Africa’s Dr Patrice Motsepe was re-elected unopposed as CAF president for a further four years after a successful first term at the helm.

Ibrahim won a three-way contest against Isha Johansen of Sierra Leone and  Lydia Nsekera from Burundi to become the female African representative on the all-powerful FIFA Council.

She polled 30 votes while there were 13 for Nsekera and seven for incumbent Johansen, who lost her place after a four-year term. Nsekere is also a former FIFA Council member.

Football Association of Zambia president Andrew Kamanga fell short in his bid for a seat on the FIFA Council, securing 19 votes in a poll of nine candidates for five places.

While six members were elected to the CAF executive unopposed from other regions, there were four candidates for the two COSAFA seats on the council with Elvis Chetty of Seychelles standing again while Maclean Letshwithi from Botswana was vacating his place.

Sidat, president of the Mozambican federation, received 45 of the 53 votes while Sobha, president of the Mauritius Football Association, polled 29 with Seychelles Football Federation president Chetty losing his seat with 26 votes.

Alfred Randriamanampisoa (Madagascar) withdrew before the voting began.
