What Ange Postecoglou loves most about Pape Sarr at Tottenham
Alasdair Gold has revealed that Ange Postecoglou is a huge fan of Pape Sarr, who the Australian views as someone who can be moulded into a top-class player at Tottenham over the coming years.
Tottenham Hotspur have been plagued by a number of problems over the course of the season, including their injury crisis and their lack of creativity in the final third.
Another under-discussed problem has been their issues in the middle of the park, where Yves Bissouma has had a poor season while Rodrigo Bentancur has struggled for consistency.
However, quietly, Pape Sarr has been having an impressive season, with the 22-year-old having added new strings to his bow.
One of them is the impact he has had in the final third with his late runs from midfield, with his strike against Bournemouth now taking his goal tally to six so far this campaign.
Ange Postecoglou sees Sarr as a talented blank canvas
Gold has now revealed that the Tottenham head coach took a liking to the Senegal international as soon he walked through the door at Hotspur Way back in 2023.
The journalist suggested that the former Metz man is viewed by Postecoglou and his coaching staff as someone who can be moulded to fit different requirements in midfield, given his all-around game.
Gold said on his YouTube Channel: “People forget about Sarr, Sarr’s only 22, he’s got so much more growth to come from his game. He’s an AFCON winner despite being young. Just at Spurs he put in some big displays, some big goals, big moments against big teams.
“He’s got six goals and two assists this season. He needs to find a bit of consistency with his technique but there is so much there to work with. Coaches must love him.
“Postecoglou really likes him. He raved about him within the first couple of weeks of joining Spurs and I think it’s because he’s a bit of a blank canvas to work with. He’s got a bit of everything, you’ve just got to mould him into whatever you want him to be.”
Pape Sarr is a testament to Fabio Paratici’s Tottenham work
Paratici oversaw some very impressive signings during his tenure as Tottenham’s managing director, but the most impressive is undoubtedly the capture of Sarr.
The youngster arrived at Spurs from a struggling Metz side who had been relegated from Ligue 1, and at first glance, the midfielder did not appear to have any eye-catching skillset.
However, Paratici identified that he did not have any glaring weaknesses in his game, which is perhaps why the Italian saw the youngster as someone who can develop into a complete midfielder.
