Manchester United confirm plan to build 'world’s greatest football stadium' - report

Manchester United have confirmed their ambition to build a new stadium to replace Old Trafford, the club’s home ground for the past 115 years.

The architecture group tasked with designing the new stadium unveiled conceptual images and scaled models today, showcasing potential designs for the stadium and the surrounding area.

The new patch will be bigger than the existing one, with a capacity expected to be 100,000, making it the biggest in Europe.

Co-owner Sir Jim Ratcliffe has confirmed that the new stadium will be built next to Old Trafford.

He said: “Today marks the start of an incredibly exciting journey to the delivery of what will be the world’s greatest football stadium, at the centre of a regenerated Old Trafford.

“Our current stadium has served us brilliantly for the past 115 years, but it has fallen behind the best arenas in world sport.

By building next to the existing site, we will be able to preserve the essence of Old Trafford while creating a truly state-of-the-art stadium that transforms the fan experience, only footsteps from our historic home.”

The new stadium will align with the club’s status as one of the biggest in Europe and will be an additional revenue source.

It could also compensate for the various job cuts that Ratcliffe has implemented since arriving at the club. The new stadium is set to create up to 92,000 new jobs.

Legendary manager Sir Alex Ferguson has backed the ambition, saying the club ‘must be brave to build a new home, fit for the future, where new history can be made’.

Chief executive officer Omar Berrada has also confirmed that they will consult fans as they ‘move towards final decisions’ for the new stadium.

Old Trafford will remain United’s home ground, as the new stadium would take five years to complete.
