Tottenham fans will like what Ange Postecoglou and Kevin Danso said Europa League aims
Ange Postecoglou reveals why the energy is now positive at Tottenham Hotspur ahead of their clash against AZ Alkmaar this evening, with the Australian explaining that the players are looking forward to the opportunity of doing something special in the Europa League.
This season has been one to forget for Tottenham, who are languishing in 13th place in the Premier League table and are out of both the Carabao Cup and the FA Cup.
The Europa League now offers a chance to salvage their season. Postecoglou’s men know they could make the campaign a memorable one if they manage to lift the trophy in Bilbao in May and end the club’s 17-year trophy drought.
Ange Postecoglou explains the Tottenham players’ mindset ahead of AZ Alkmaar clash
The Australian coach will know that his side cannot afford to look too far into the future as they first need to focus on the task of getting a result in the Netherlands in the first leg of their round of 16 clash against Alkmaar.
Some might feel that there is pressure on the Tottenham Hotspur players, given how the season has gone so far and the importance of this tie, but Postecoglou insists that there is a real hunger in the squad to do something special in the Europa League.
The Spurs head coach said ahead of his side’s clash at Alkmaar (via The Guardian): “I think it is fair to say the boys really understand there is a great opportunity for us. I think they’ve appreciated the fact that the guys who have been playing through are now able to recover and train and prepare themselves better for games.
“That’s coincided with seeing their teammates come back and certainly the guys that have been out injured, we’ve already seen with guys like Guglielmo Vicario, Brennan Johnson, James Maddison to a lesser extent [due to time out].
“But Wilson Odobert, Destiny Udogie – they’ve come back with real hunger and desire to help the team because I think they’ve all been frustrated to sit on the sidelines and see how difficult it has been for the group of players who have been playing. They’ve just wanted to help and now they get that opportunity.”
Kevin Danso believes Spurs can go all the way in Europa League
January signing, Kevin Danso, who has hit the ground running at Tottenham, is also confident that Spurs have the tools to lift the trophy at the San Mames in a little over two months.
Like his manager, the Austrian international also spoke of the positive atmosphere within the group at the moment after the return of key players.
When asked if Tottenham can win the Europa League, Danso said: “A hundred per cent and I think it’s possible. I said before the [Manchester] United game with the week of training that we had with some of the injured lads coming back.
“It was a lot of positive energy around the place and we ended up winning that game and keeping a clean sheet. It’s the same feeling now with Mickey and Cuti [Romero] back in the squad and everybody is wanting to finish the season strong.”
