Patriots Rumors: Jerod Mayo’s Brother Addressed Team In ‘Awkward’ Meeting
Talk about awkward.
Deron Mayo, the younger brother of recently fired Patriots head coach Jerod Mayo, remains on New England’s staff. The 36-year-old enters his eighth season with the organization after spending six as an assistant under Bill Belichick.
It’s a wildly different situation this time around, though. The strength and conditioning coach is working for the same organization that fired his older brother after just one season and replaced him with Mike Vrabel.

It’s not lost on those inside or outside One Patriot Place, as reported by the Boston Herald’s Andrew Callahan and Doug Kyed on Sunday. The Herald also shed light on New England’s day-after-season team meeting in which Deron Mayo addressed the group.
“It was a surprise to one staffer that Deron Mayo, Jerod’s brother, returned as strength and conditioning coach because Deron spoke up in the team’s final meeting the Monday morning after Jerod was fired,” the Herald wrote.
“The staffer called it, ‘the most awkward three minutes of my life,’ but also admitted he secretly enjoyed it since he knew he, too, was getting fired.”
Jerod Mayo promoted Deron Mayo to head strength and conditioning coach last season. The latter now will serve on the strength and conditioning staff under Frank Piraino, director of sports performance.
