NFL Rumors: Patriots Surprisingly Not Interested In This Star Free Agent

Josh Sweat apparently shouldn’t wait for a phone call from Mike Vrabel’s Patriots.

The Boston Herald’s Andrew Callahan and Doug Kyed published a story Sunday with intel on New England’s free agency plans. In doing so, the Herald reported four players who are “top targets” for the team and others who are “not expected to draw interest.”

Sweat, specifically, isn’t expected to draw interest from New England.

He was the most eye-catching of the names given all the offseason speculation linking the Philadelphia Eagles pass-rusher to the Patriots. New England badly needs pass-rush help and Sweat is considered the best edge defender on the open market.

Buffalo Bills receiver Amari Cooper, Houston Texans receiver Stefon Diggs and Los Angeles Chargers outside linebacker Khalil Mack also were named as players who “are not expected to draw interest” from New England.

Cooper, Diggs and Mack don’t offer the same level of surprise. While the Patriots need receivers for Drake Maye, both Cooper and Diggs are on the wrong side of 30 with injury issues and other potential concerns. Mack, who just turned 34 years old, is still a three-down force but doesn’t fit the team’s timeline to contend.
