Tottenham consider triggering Matheus Cunha’s huge release clause this summer
Tottenham Hotspur are now seriously considering triggering the release clause of Matheus Cunha. The Wolves star has been outstanding since he arrived in the Premier League 18 months ago, but the Lilywhites are expected to face competition from two of their London rivals.
Richarlison had shown some promising signs in a Tottenham shirt when he featured but frustratingly for Ange Postecoglou, the Brazilian’s injury woes have prevented him from having a run in the Spurs starting eleven.
Many will not be surprised if Spurs decide to cut their losses on the former Everton man at the end of the season, particularly after Mathys Tel’s arrival at the club in January.
One would expect the Lilywhites to add to their attacking stocks this summer if Richarlison and Timo Werner both depart, and it has now been revealed that Tottenham have set their sights on Matheus Cunha.
Cunha has a release clause of £62m at Wolves
Matheus Cunha continues to be the lone shining light in what has been a difficult campaign for Wolves so far, with the forward managing 17 goal contributions in 26 league outings this term.
The forward signed a contract extension with Wolves in January, which has a £62m release clause that becomes active this summer.
According to Fichajes, Spurs are now seriously considering activating that clause as they want to bring Cunha to the Tottenham Hotspur Stadium.
The report claims that Tottenham are in search of an attacker who compliments the options they have upfront, and they view Matheus Cunha as one for the future.
Tottenham may battle London rivals for Matheus Cunha
The outlet states that Tottenham are not the only ones monitoring Matheus Cunha’s situation, with Arsenal and Chelsea also having him on their shopping list.
The Gunners are looking to add depth to their attack while Chelsea see Cunha as ‘key piece of their project’ as they are plotting a summer rebuild.
As a result, it is suggested that a number of clubs may be willing to trigger the forward’s release clause, with the 25-year-old expected to have several offers to choose from.
The publication adds that Vitor Pereira’s team are aware of the interest building in their star striker and may have a ‘crucial decision to make’ in a few months.
