Ange Postecoglou’s stance on new contract for Tottenham midfielder revealed
Ange Postecoglou is pushing Tottenham Hotspur to tie down a senior man to a new contract even though the player has not been at his best consistently throughout this season.
Rodrigo Bentancur enters the final year of his contract with Tottenham this summer. Rumours first emerged earlier this week that Spurs had initiated talks with Bentancur regarding a new deal.
Ange Postecoglou was directly asked about the speculation a couple of days ago, and while he refused to confirm or deny the rumours, he did make it clear that the Uruguayan was part of his plans.
The Tottenham head coach also pointed out that it has been a difficult past 18 months for Bentancur, who has struggled for continuity due to his injuries and suspension, and remarked that the 27-year-old is now showing signs of coming back to his best.

A report in TuttoMercatoWeb has now confirmed that Spurs have indeed begun work to renew the former Juve man’s deal as they do not want to allow him to enter the final year of his contract.
The outlet claims that Postecoglou is very much in favour of handing Bentancur an extension and is actually ‘pushing’ for the midfielder’s renewal.
It is claimed that the Australian sees the player as ‘fundamental’ to his project moving forward and has expressed that to the Tottenham hierarchy.
Tottenham have started contacts with Bentancur’s entourage, but the discussions are still in their early stages and have not progressed as of yet.
Spurs are expected to schedule more meetings with the player’s representatives over the coming weeks as they aim to tie him down.

Bentancur is very much a modern-day midfielder, who has very few weaknesses to his game.
He has a fantastic engine, is good at retaining possession in tight spaces, is decent and winning back possession and is a skilled technician, who always has a picture of what is around him and is capable of playing line-breaking passes.
That is why he is someone who can thrive in a number of different systems, as he has shown under Antonio Conte as well as Postecoglou.
The former Juventus man remains one of the most underrated players in the Tottenham squad and it is a no-brainer for the club to tie him down to a new contract.
