Tottenham formulate five-man shortlist to replace Yves Bissouma in midfield
Tottenham Hotspur have decided to offload Yves Bissouma this summer and have formulated a five-man shortlist to address their issues in the middle of the park.
The midfield department was neglected by Tottenham during the January transfer window and one would thus expect reinforcements in the position to be prioritised by the club in the summer.
It has been widely reported that Spurs are looking to tie down Rodrigo Bentancur to a new contract. While Ange Postecoglou refused to confirm or deny Bentancur talks, he made it clear that the Uruguayan is part of his long-term plans.
A fresh update has now suggested that Bentancur’s midfield partner, Yves Bissouma, could be on his way out, with Spurs already having formed a shortlist to replace the former Brighton man.
Tottenham could replace Yves Bissouma with Johnny Cardoso
This update comes from GiveMeSport, who claim that Postecoglou and Johan Lange have already formulated a five-man shortlist to take Bissouma’s place in the squad.
Unsurprisingly, one of those players is Real Betis’ Johnny Cardoso, who Tottenham have an option to buy in the summer, with the outlet claiming that a move for the USA international is ‘not being ruled out’ by Spurs.
The report backs up what we have already heard from other sources about the Lilywhites’ interest in Angel Gomes, revealing that they are trying to seal a pre-contract agreement with the Lille man, who will be a free agent in June.
The publication adds that Eintracht Frankfurt’s Hugo Larsson, Crystal Palace’s Adam Wharton and Lens’ Andy Diouf are the three other players that Tottenham are continuing to keep a close eye on ahead of the summer.
Postecoglou has to consider one factor before signing a midfielder
There is no doubt that Tottenham do need reinforcements in the middle of the park this summer. Signing another energetic and ball-playing number six would strengthen the squad, especially given Bissouma’s struggles in this system.
However, Ange Postecoglou would be mindful of the fact that Lucas Bergvall has done well in a slightly deeper role of late, while Archie Gray is also a midfielder by trade, although he is yet to get an opportunity there for Spurs.
The Australian will thus be cautious of how any new signing will affect the pair’s development as both 18-year-olds have the attributes to evolve into top-class players over the next year or two if given regular opportunities.
