Ange Postecoglou is ‘genuinely excited’ about potential of Tottenham starlet

0 2

Ange Postecoglou is delighted to have one Tottenham attacker back from injury, insisting that he expects the player to leave a huge mark on the Premier League over the coming years.

Wilson Odobert’s Spurs debut could not have gone any better, with the winger announcing himself to the Tottenham faithful in style with an outstanding performance against Everton.

However, not too long after that, the former Burnley man suffered a hamstring injury and subsequently was hit with a further setback during his recovery, which has meant that he has hardly played any football this season.

The Frenchman has now returned to action and has made a decent impact off the bench in Tottenham’s wins over both Man Utd and Ipswich.

Ange Postecoglou is excited about Wilson Odobert’s potential

Postecoglou remarked that Odobert is different to the other attacking players at his disposal, given his ability to carry the ball and take players on one-v-one.

The Tottenham boss backed the teenager to have a strong finish to the season and make a big impact on the Premier League next term.

When asked about Odobert’s return, Postecoglou told Football London: “[His absence] was disappointing because I am genuinely excited about Wilson’s potential as a footballer. He’s got really unique qualities that are exciting to see how they develop.

“And particularly to the way we want to play. He’s the one player that is a bit different to the others in terms of our attacking players. The dribbling capacity that he has, it’s hard to find. And he has that and enjoys that part of the game. He was a new signing but we haven’t really seen him yet. But with him, there’s still an opportunity there to make an impact this year.

“We’ll be careful with him in terms of how we reintegrate him, but there’s a good chunk of the season there with some important games so hopefully he finishes the season strong and then next year I think he’ll make a real big impact, not just with us but in the league.”

Is Odobert the missing piece of the puzzle for Tottenham?

One of the reasons many Spurs fans were excited about Odobert’s potential is precisely because of the point of difference that Postecoglou mentions.

The winger gets people off their seats by running at defenders, which is not something that the likes of Brennan Johnson, Heung-min Son (at this stage of his career) or even Dejan Kulusevski are good at.

That has been the missing piece of the puzzle for Spurs, whose wide players have often got into good positions in the final third this season but have opted not to take the aggressive option, instead preferring to pass the ball back.
