Tottenham may have made a mistake by selling Pierre-Emile Hojberg - Opinion

0 11

Statistics reveal that Tottenham Hotspur might have made a mistake by selling former midfielder Pierre-Emile Hojbjerg in the summer.

Just last summer, Tottenham Hotspur decided to part ways with Pierre-Emile Hojberg a player signed by Jose Mourinho back in 2020.

In Ange Postecoglou’s first season at the club, the former Southampton midfielder made 39 appearances for the Lilywhites. Of the thirty-nine appearances, only ten were starts as Postecoglou favoured Sarr and Bissouma over the Danish midfielder.

With Hojbjerg set to enter the last year of his Spurs contract in 2025, the Lilywhites sought to quickly cash in on a deal. They did just that by loaning the 29-year-old to Marseille with an obligation that would see Tottenham receive £17m for Hojbjerg once the move became permanent.

Stats hint Tottenham made a mistake selling Pierre-Emile Hojbjerg

Since making the switch from England to France, the midfielder has not looked back. His underlying numbers suggest that perhaps Spurs may have parted ways with the wrong midfielder last summer.

According to Fbref, when compared with midfielders in the top five leagues in Europe, Hojbjerg is in the 99th percentile for passes attempted, 96th percentile for pass completion, 96th percentile for progressive passes and 93rd percentile for interceptions.

To put that into context, Yves Bissouma, is in the 85th percentile for passes attempted, 95th percentile for pass completion, 80th percentile for progressive passes and 77th percentile for interceptions.

Is time up for Yves Bissouma at Spurs?

So far this campaign Bissouma has been nothing but inconsistent. The midfielder sometimes looks great and solid and then the next game he looks horrendous.

The game against Liverpool in the Carabao Cup semi-final was one of the worst displays from the midfielder in recent times.

It is clear that this season, he has struggled at this level. If he cannot keep up with the pace and the demands of Premier League football, then the club has to consider parting ways with him this summer.
