Why Spurs officially do not want to be called Tottenham anymore
The Athletic have revealed at Tottenham Hotspur‘s behest, an email has been sent to media outlets asking them to change the terminology with which the North London club are referred to during TV broadcasts.
Spurs announced last year their decision to “remaster the club’s brand identity”, which was rolled out across all the platforms, including in the digital space.
Among the changes instituted, included the removal of the curved ‘Tottenham Hotspur’ text from beneath the cockerel, which they said enabled the club to increase its scale across different environments.
Additionally, they announced that the cockerel will now be supported by a new silhouette version and that they had also remastered the famous ‘THFC monogram’, which has been used since the 1950s.
Tottenham Hotspur tell broadcasters to make big name change
According to The Athletic, Spurs have now asked the official broadcasters to change the way the club are referred to. The outlet reveals that they have received an email, which has been sent to all broadcasters, titled ‘Tottenham Hotspur Naming Update’.
The email says: “Tottenham Hotspur have provided clarification regarding the club’s name. They have requested that the club be primarily known as Tottenham Hotspur, with Spurs being the preferred short version. The club have requested that they are not referred to as Tottenham.”
The report goes on to explain the club are comfortable with the brand being referred to as ‘Tottenham Hotspur’, ‘Tottenham Hotspur Football Club’, ‘THFC’ or ‘Spurs’, but never ‘Tottenham’, ‘Tottenham Hotspur FC’ or ‘TH’.
Why have Spurs done this?
The explanation that the Lilywhites have given for this change is that ‘Tottenham’ is the name of the area and not the name of the club.
They say that it has been a long-standing club policy not to refer to themselves as ‘Tottenham’, a position which they have held since 2011.
The Athletic reveal that based on this guidance, Sky Sports have already changed their graphics to change the name ‘Tottenham’ to ‘Spurs’ on their table graphic.
The Premier League website has also removed all references to ‘Tottenham’, using the club’s full name, ‘Tottenham Hotspur’, or the preferred short name of ‘Spurs’.
