Red Sox Sign Brother Of NBA Superstar To Minor League Deal

It looks like Dallas Mavericks star Klay Thompson has no choice but to be a Boston Red Sox fan for the time being.

The Red Sox on Monday afternoon announced they signed Thompson’s younger brother, Trayce, to a minor league deal and invited him to spring training. He’s also the son of two-time NBA champion Mychal Thompson.

Trayce Thompson pent all of last season playing for the Triple-A affiliates of the New York Mets and Chicago Cubs. The 33-year-old outfielder combined to bat .233 with 23 home runs and 66 RBIs across 107 games.

The last time Thompson found himself in the big leagues came in 2023 when he split that season with the Chicago White Sox and Los Angeles Dodgers. He didn’t perform well, though, hitting just .163 with six home runs and 17 RBIs in 72 games.

Thompson has spent parts of seven seasons in the big leagues playing for five different teams. He suited up the most with the Dodgers — four seasons — but also had stints with the White Sox, Cubs, San Diego Padres and Oakland Athletics. Thompson has 369 games of big-league experience under his belt and batted .212 with 45 home runs and 126 RBIs in his career.

Thompson, a 2009 second-round pick of the White Sox, figures to provide outfield depth for the Red Sox. He brings the number of non-roster invitees at Red Sox spring training up to 21 and Thompson is one of only two exclusive outfielders, joining Roman Anthony.
