How Alex Bregman Just Took Pressure Off Elite Red Sox Prospects

0 12

The reported signing of Alex Bregman has so many trickle-down effects for the Boston Red Sox.

He makes the lineup better. His swing is made for Fenway Park. He brings championship experience and leadership to the clubhouse.

In terms of the roster, he also just took the pressure of Opening Day expectations for Boston’s three top prospects: Kristian Campbell, Roman Anthony and Marcelo Mayer. Those players are going to impact the MLB club in 2025, no doubt about it. Now, the Red Sox can take their time promoting that trio if they feel that needs to happen.

ESPN’s Jeff Passan reported Wednesday night that the Red Sox plan to play Bregman at second base. That’s not a shock. Boston’s had a hole at second base since Dustin Pedroia’s career came to a close and Alex Cora believes Bregman can win a Gold Glove at that position.

Campbell entered camp with a real argument to win that spot on the Opening Day roster. Obviously, if the Red Sox are that confident in keeping Rafael Devers at third base and playing Bregman at second, so be it.

Campbell’s taken outfield reps in the past and could find his way there as long as Bregman plays second base. Anthony will also take an outfield spot, in all likelihood, during the season. The Red Sox have areas to shuffle as these prospects push through to the majors, but guess what? That’s a great problem to have.

The Red Sox now have an excellent lineup with Bregman in the fold. That’s not even considering Campbell and Anthony yet. That’s a really intriguing thought for the outcome of Boston’s 2025 campaign.
