Exclusive: Medvedev ‘in  love’ with Kompany’s style at Bayern Munich

Tennis superstar Daniil Medvedev has confessed his admiration for Bayern Munich’s present style of football under Belgian coach Vincent Kompany this season.

Medvedev told Rant Sports that he stopped watching the Bavarians’ games at some point before Kompany’s appointment but he has since made a U-turn and he is now cheering them to win silverware.

Bayern Munich sit comfortably at the top of the Bundesliga table with an eight-point above reigning champions, Bayer Leverkusen.

They will continue their hunt for a seventh UEFA Champions League trophy on Wednesday with a knockout phase fixture against Celtic.

Just as he intensifies preparation for his round of 16 game at the ATP 250 Open 13 Provence on Thursday, Medvedev assured that he will watch Bayern Munich’s game on Wednesday night.

Medvedev speaks on Bayern Munich and Kompany

When quizzed about Bayern Munich’s chances of lifting Europe’s prestigious football title, Medvedev told Rant Sports: “I honestly love the way they play. I know Vincent Kompany, I found out they had a couple of bad luck in recent matches which they drew or lost.

“In my opinion, they have played much better than others this season. I would really like to watch them now because there was one moment when it was a little bit tougher for me to watch Bayern Munich matches because of the style they played, but I love it now.

“I will watch their game against Celtic and I do believe Bayern Munich can win the Champions League.”

Under Kompany, the Bavarians have shown solidity in defence with an apparent high defensive line which has resulted in the least number of goals conceded in the Bundesliga this season (19 goals), thanks to the understanding and presence of Dayot Upamecano and Minjae Kim.

Similarly in the attack, there is growing confidence and improved fluidity amongst the pacy and creative players which is evident in Bayern Munich’s free-scoring mode having scored 65 Bundesliga goals in 21 games (16 goals better than their closest rivals).

Medvedev hoping to reclaim lost glory

The Russian superstar had a forgettable run at the first Grand Slam of the year, the Australian Open after he was stunned by American Learner Tien in the second round.

Following a trophyless 2024 ATP season, Medvedev is hoping to rejuvenate his career with a silverware in Marseille, southern France.

The former world number one has dropped to eighth position in the latest ATP rankings as Jannik Sinner leads the log with Alexander Zverev and Carlos Alcaraz completing the top three.

Other names above Medvedev are Taylor Fritz, Casper Ruud, Alex de Minaur and Novak Djokovic.

His outing in Marseille would be his third competitive appearance in 2025 after his round of 16 exit from the ATP Rotterdam a week ago.
